Abstract

PURPOSE: To reproduce accurately features of an objective picture by generating a histogram curve of frequency for density of all picture elements and detecting inflection points and correcting the threshold of a white background or a black background to determine a binary threshold.
CONSTITUTION: An objective picture is divided into required picture elements, and the density level of each picture element is shown by one of plural digital values "1"..."9". Next, the density of picture elements N(i), (i=1...8), which are adjacent to noticing picture element Px in front, back, right, left and oblique directions, and the density of noticing picture element Px are compared with each other to detect, for example, Px≥N(i) and the average. This operation is performed for all picture elements to generate a histogram curve of frequency for density, and inflection points are detected to correct the threshold of a white back-ground or a black background, thereby determining a binary threshold. As a result, features of the objective picture can be accurately reproduced.
