Abstract
PURPOSE:To let reflected wave intensities be proportional to the shape of objects by making at least one beam out of ultrasonic transmission and reception waves to a narrow beam width. CONSTITUTION:The ultrasonic beam 6 of a wide width from a transmitter 4 refrects on an object 20 and is received as reflected beams of a narrow width in the respective elements 51, 52 ... of a receiver 5. The digital values of these receiving signals are stored in a memory element 11 and the phases of the outputs of the elements 51, 52... having been stored in the element 11 are controlled by a synthesizing circuit 12, whereby the directional main axis of the receiver 5 is subsequently directed to arbitrary directions within the direction width of the transmitter 4. Hence, the detection outputs by the elements 51, 52 ... of the reflected receiving beam intensities of a narrow width from the beam directing direction of the transmission beam of a wide width radiated at a right angle to the object 20 are proportional to the shape of the object and if the transmitter and receiver 4, 5 are moved in two directions, the accurate discrimination of the three-dimensional shape of the object may be performed.
