Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a high purity Na by preventing the occurrence of cracks in diaphragm by the procedure in which the molten salt of Na compound having reduced K content is subjected to a diaphragm process electrolysis.
CONSTITUTION: The molten salt of Na compound whose K content is reduced to preferably 0.01 wt% is subjected to electrolysis using the diaphragm 4. In this case, the diaphragm 4 used is a crystalline ceramic having a permeability for monovalent alkali ions, and the cathode 2 used is metallic Na. In electrolysis of the anolyte I, Na ion passes through the diaphragm 4 to approaches the cathode 2, where metallic Na is formed and overflowed from 6 for collection. The use of the Na compound molten salt of reduced K content prevents the development of cracks in diaphragm, thus greatly lengthening the life of diaphragm and also permitting the production of hgh purity Na.
