Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain acrylamide of high grade, by hydrating acrylonitrile in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst and a specific compound.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylonitrile is hydrated in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst and 0.005W10wt.% based on the acrylonitrile of at least one type of compound selected from ammonia, ureas, melamines aromatic amines, e.g. aniline, etc., lower alkylamines, e.g. diethylamine, etc., and lower alkanolamines, e.g. diethanolamine, etc. at 20W300°C to form acrylamide. A polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, etc. may be preferably added to the reaction system.
EFFECT: formation of impurities as by products in the reaction, particulavly those which connot be removed by ion excharge resin treatment, can be suppressed.
USE: A raw material for polyacylamide which is a flocculant.
