Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for using a plurality of lamps for controlling paper width and prolong the life of a heat roller by providing a heat exchanging means for evening surface temperature in contact with the heat roller.
CONSTITUTION: A backup roller 4 is a heat pipe which comprises sealing liquid such as water, alcohol, etc. within a core roller 9 of good heat conductivity such as copper, aluminum, etc. and affixing a wick 10 absorbing the liquid on the inside surface. When the width of the recording paper 1 to be fixed is smaller than the width of a heat roller 3, the backup roller 4 is a heat pipe and the evaporation liquefaction action of the liquid which has absorbed and entrapped the heat of the high temperature part suppresses the temperature elevation of the portion not in contact with the paper and increases the temperature of the portion pressing the paper, heating the paper from the back side. As a result, the quantity of the heat absorbed in the paper by the heat roller 3 is decreased and the temperature decrease of this portion is suppressed. In this way, the temperature differences are kept low and the life of the elastic body of the heat roller surface may be prolonged.
