Abstract

PURPOSE: To simplify the circuit in the space division type display unit by setting the voltage applied to the block electrode to the same amplitude for both the ON- state and the active state.
CONSTITUTION: The space division type display unit contains terminals B1WB3 of block electrodes 21W23 plus terminals S1WS3 of segments 31W35. To light up segments 31W35, the voltage of ON, active and OFF states are applied to terminals B1WB3 respectively. Voltage amplitude V1 of the ON and active states are identical; the voltage of the ON state features double amplitude compared with the active state; and the voltage amplitude of the OFF state is set to zero respectively. At the same time, the OFF-state voltage featuring the smae phase as the active state and amplitude VO of 1/2 V1 is applied to terminal S1, and the ON-state voltage featuring the same amplitude V0 as terminal S1 with the reverse phase is applied to terminal S2 and S3. In such combinations, the voltage applied to the liquid crystal cell features the maximum ratio between the lighting time and non-lighting time, thus ensuring a high-contrast dispaly through the simple circuit constitution.
