Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce an optical fiber, which has no variation in refractive index in the form of an annular ring, by introducing gases of glass material into a longitudinal hot portion of a quartz pipe, when it is intended to produce a communication glass fiber, which has a refractive index distribution of graded type, by the CVD method. CONSTITUTION:Glass material gases are injected into the opening 25 of a quartz pipe 21, while transversely moving the pipe 21, so that all the components of the material gases are simultaneously sedimented and separated in the portion (corresponding to that shown at 23), where the temperature takes the maximum by the heating process of a ring burner 22. After one sedimented layer has been formed, the composition of the material gases is changed, and the formation of the next separated layer is made. These steps are repeated. And, the residual gases, which have failed to react during the blowing step of the material gases, and the reaction products are always sucked and discharged during operation through a discharge duct 27. As a result, even at such a low temperature portion as can effect the reactions of germanium and boron which can react at a slightly lower temperature near the highest temperature range, these elements can be prevented from reacting and being sedimented.
