Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the back tension of tape of always stable constant value satisfactorily by finely vibrating a tape guide with an electro-mechanical transducer thereby controlling its friction coefficient with the tape.
CONSTITUTION: A tape guide 2 which is provided therein with an electro-mechanical transducer formed by a piezoelectric ceramic cylinder 3, electordes 4a, 4b, etc. is finely vibrated in its circumferential direction by the high frequency electric signal being applied to the electrodes 4a, 4b. When the amplitude or frequency of this high frequency electric signal is controlled according to the signal corresponding to the back tension of the tape being detected by a tape tension detecting means 18, then the friction coefficient of the guide 2 and the tape changes, thereby changing the back tension being applied to the tape. In this case, the friction resistance is smaller as compared to that in the case of a stationary guide owing to the fine vibrations of the guide 2 and therefore the back tension being applied to the tape stabilizes at an always constant and small value, and is thus well adjusted and controlled
