Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a powdery acrylonitrile polymer having high bulk density, and useful as fibers having excellent filtering characteristics, cleanability and dehydrating property, by introducing specific amount of sulfonate groups, etc. to the polymer.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous suspension of acrylonitrile and a monomer having a sulfonic group, e.g. allyl sulfonate, etc., is prepared so as to give a polymer containing ≥ 85 wt.% of acrylonitrile and ≥5×10-5 equivalent/g-polymer of sulfonate group. A redox catalyst, e.g. potassium persulfate, sodium bisulfite, etc. is added to the suspension, and the polymerization is carried out at an electrolyte concentration of preferably ≤0.15 mole/1(water), at a ratio of water to the monomer of 2W4 and at PH of 2W4. The polymer is washed and dired by a centrifugal drier, etc. kto give the desired polymer.
EFFECT: The powdery polymer has a reduced angle of repose and excellent lowability, therefore advantageous for powder transportation, weighing, etc.
