Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the absorption of nitrogen into molten steel by the method in which in the oxygen blast smelting of steel in converter, an organic substance is added into the converter at the time of afterblasting and then burned in order to purge air. CONSTITUTION:In the oxygen blast smelting of steel in converter, after the blasting of predetermined amount of oxygen has finished, the blasting is stopped and then the composition of steel is analyzed. In case where balsting is unsufficient, oxygen is again blasted into converter to smelt steel, whereupon an organic substance, e.g., a binder-solidified saw dust, dried pulp mill waste waters, etc., is put into the converter. When the organic substance is burned in the converter, the flame purges the air in the converter and thus prevents the absorption of nitrogen present in air into molten steel at the time of afterblasting.
