Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently compose or separate plural beams by suing a Bragg's diffraction grating.
CONSTITUTION: A Bragg's diffraction grating 13 having a narrow angle selecting range is prepared. When a first beam 14 having a wavelength λ1 is introduced into the grating 13 in the direction satisfying the Bragg's diffractive condition, it is diffracted as a beams 15 in an efficiency near 100%. When a second beam 16 having a wavelength λ2 is introduced into the grating 14 in the same direction as that of the beam 15, most of it passes as it is and is turned into a transmitted beam 17. When the difference in Bragg's angle between the two beams 14 and 16 is higher than the angle selecting ranges β1 and β2 of the grating 13, the transmissivity of the second beam 16 becomes near 100% so that the two beams 14 and 16 are composed in high efficiency. If diffraction gratings 18 and 19 are used, beams 20 and 21 can also be composed. If the composed beam is irradiated in the opposite direction, the separation can be accomplished
