Abstract

PURPOSE: To crack heavy oils and remove metal without using hydrogen gas and catalysts, by hydrocracking the heavy hydrocarbons in the presence of a hydrogen donor, using a metal-containing pitchy substance as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrocracking of heavy hydrocarbons is carried out by using an organic compound, e.g. cyclohexane, tetralin, etc. which liberates hydrogen as a hydrigen donor, and a pitchy substance, which is insoluble in benzene, obtained by thermal decomposition of hydrocarbons and contains V or Ni, as a catalyst, thus cracking the hydrocarbons and removing the metals contained in the hydrocarbons by depositing in the pitchy substance
