Abstract

PURPOSE: The anionic polymerization of lactam is conducted by using a quarternary phosphonium salt as a catalyst to produce lactam polymer with high heat stability.
CONSTITUTION: The anionic polymerization of lactam is conducted by using a quarternary phosphonium salt, e.g., a compound of formula I (R1, R2, R3, R4 are respectively residues of aliphatic, alicyclic and aromatic hydrocarbyls; Mn- is n-valent anion; n is 1, 2) as a catalyst. The preferable compound of quarternary phosphonium salt of formula I is prepared by the reaction between an anionically polymerizable monomer and a quarternary phosphonium base of formula II. The anionically polymerizable monomers are, e.g., lactams and cyclic siloxanes. The quarternary phosphonium base of formula II is, e. g., tetramethylphosphonium hydroxide, triphenylmethylphosphonium hydroxide
