PURPOSE: To maintain tracking automatically in the finest condition with high accuracy by creating the reference signal of the phase corresponding to optimum tracking with respect to reproduction tape position reference signal and performing tracking servo with this signal as a standard. CONSTITUTION:In the automatic tracing system of changing the phase lock state of reproduction tape position refernce signal (CTL signal) and information signal reference signal (vertical synchronizing signal or PG signal)according to tracing error information, a drum servo 60 receives the PG signal from a pickoff device 62 which detects the revolutions of a rotary head drum and receives the drum servo reference signal from a timing counter 66. A capstan servo 68 receives the CTL signal from a CTL head 70 and receives the capstan servo reference signal from an automatic tracking circuit 72. Thereby, the VTR may be maintained in the finest tracking condition automatically and surely.
