Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare (meth)acrylic acid in high yield, by contacting an amydaseactive actinomyces or its enzyme with (meth)acrylamide under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Actinomyces which can hydrolyze acrylamide, e.g. Actinomyces 10021 (FERM-P No.3451), or its variant, is inoculated in a nutrient medium, and cultured at pH 6W8 and 25W40°C under aeration and agitation. Produced cells or enzyme existing therein are added (0.5W5% dry basis) to a 5W20% aqueous solution of (meth)acrylamide and made to react at pH 5W9 and 25W40°C. The reaction mixture is centrifuged to separate the microbial cells, and subjected to ion exchange chromatography, solvent extraction, etc. to remove the impurities. (Meth)acrylic acid is recovered from the solution by vaccum concentration or distillation. The separation and purification of the product are easily carried out by this process, since no reagent is used and by-products are little produced in the process.
