Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyester having improved molding properties, high quality, and little foreign matter, by using a zinc and a cobalt compounds, and the reaction product of an aromatic polyfunctional carboxylic acid with a tetraalkyl titanate as catalysts.
CONSTITUTION: A zinc and a cobalt compounds, whose quantities meet all the formulaeIWIV, are used as ester exchange catalysts, and the reaction product of an aromatic polyfunctional carboxylic acid or its anhydride with a tetraalkyl titanate is used as a polycondensation catalyst, in the production of a polyester wherein a dialkyl ester of bifunctional carboxylic acid component comprising terephthalic acid is reacted with a glycol component comprising ethylene glycol by an ester exchanger reaction, followed by polycondensation of the ester exchange reaction product. The quantity of the polycondensation catalyst is such that the titanium atom content is 3W25millimol% based on the dialkyl ester of the bifunctional carboxylic acids. Zn and Co denote the amounts of zinc and cobalt compounds in millimol% based on the dialkyl ester of bifunctional carboxylic acid.
