Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the hydrogen embrittlement of a stainless steel base metal and a weld metal under a high temp. high press, hydrogen amosphere by adding an adquate amt. of ferrite to the metals so as to limit carbides to be precipitated, at the time of weld postheating in the ferrite matrix. CONSTITUTION:When a stainless steel base metal and a weld metal subjected to weld postheating in manufacture of a vessel are operated under a high temp. high press, hydrogen atmosphere, the stainless steel absorbs a large amt. of hydrogen, lowering the elongation. So, cracjing occurs on ta portion where stress concentrates. In order to prevent the occurrence of cracking, 3-7% ferrite is added to the metals prior to the postheating to limit carbides to be precipitated at the time of the postheating in the ferrite matrix. As a result, ferrite in the stainless steel preferentially precipitated owing to the carbides is present discontinuously and sporadically, and hence more than 30% elingation can be maintained even if hydgrogen treatment is carried out after the postheating, resulting in no cracking.
