Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a porous body of polytetrafluoroethylene having high porosity and strength through a simple process, by stretching a molded body of polytetrafluoroethylene blended with a blowing agent and a liquid lubricant while the body is heated and sintered.
CONSTITUTION: A blowing agent and preferably 10W30 parts by wt. of a liquid lubricant, e.g., naphtha, is added to 100 parts by wt. of powder of polytetrafluoroethyleme. The mixture thus obtained is molded into a bar or a tube. The molded body is permitted to stand as it is or heated at temperatures of a decomposition point of the blowing agent to the melting point of the molded body to decompose and to expand the blowing agent. Both ends in the direction of stretching of the molded body are placed on the outside of a heating zone. The molded body in the heating zone is heated up to a temperature not lower than the melting point of the molded article, and stretched at least in one direction in a draw ratio of 20W700 % while it is being sintered to give the desired porous body.
