Abstract

PURPOSE: To effectively reduce COD with use of a small amount of an oxidizer by adding an organic or inorganic acid to the waste water containing S2O3 -- and the like (such as the immersion water from the slag produced at iron making plants or the like) so as to adjust the pH value, stagnating it for a predetermined time for acidic decomposition of the S2O3 -- and like, and then adding an oxidizer.
CONSTITUTION: The waste water containing S2O3 -- and the like (such as the immersion water from slag) is added with an organic or inorganic acid to adjust the pH value, preferably to below 2, and the waste water is stagnated for 2 to 3 hours. By this, S2O3 2- and S2- are acidically decomposed according to the following formulas: S2O2- 3 + H+ → S + SO2- 3, 2S2- + H+ → S + HS-. After separation of S, an oxidizer such as Cl2 is added for oxidizing treatment. This method enables large reduction of the addition amount of oxidizer and large reduction in running cost.
