Abstract

PURPOSE: A halogenated epoxy resin is made to act on a resol type phenol-formaldehyde resin to produce said reactive halogen-containing flame retarder that lowers no characteristics of the resin and is free from the change with the passage of time.
CONSTITUTION: A phenyl glycidyl ether in which 1W3 hydrogens of the phenyl group are substituted with halogen atoms, a bis-phenol A diglycidyl ether whose phenyl group is substituted with 1W4 halogen atoms, or their mixture is made act on a resol type phenol-formaldehyde resin containing scarcely unreactive phenol monomers and the reaction is continued until the epoxy groups are consumed. The resol type phenol-formaldehyde resin is, e.g., prepared from phenols and 1.0W3.0 moles based on the penols, of formaldehyde and the resulting resin contains preferably less than 5%, more preferably less than 1% of unreactive phenols.
