Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure surface roughness of members such as of metals, high polymey films ceramics, etc. by making use of the fact that the surface roughness of magngetic recording media appear as void loss at the recording and reproducing.
CONSTITUTION: Recording is made at recording wavelengths above 5μ by a recording head 6 on the measuring object 8 formed with a magnetic material thin film on its surface by such methods as vacuum evaporation method, sputtering method, ion plating method and the like, after which the signals having been recorded are reproduced with a playback head 7 and are then amplified. The amplified signals are passed through a band pass filter 10 and are thence inputted to an integrator 11, whereby the mean magnitude of the fluctuations of the surface may be known. It is also possible to measure the fluctuations in an extremely short section with a waveform memory device 12 as well as to perform frequency analysis of the undulations of the measuring object 8 surface.
