Abstract

PURPOSE:To correct the asymmetry of current of a discharge lamp and prevent its flicker, by separately controlling the turn-on time of a switching semiconductor element at the positive and negative half cycles of AC power. CONSTITUTION:If the magnitude a current bypassed from the discharge lamp 30 differs depending on its polarity, and output signal is generated by a current averaging circuit 52 and amplified by an error amplifier circuit 53 so that an asymmetry generator circuit 54 produces an output signal having a positive voltage whose magnitude differs between the positive and negative half cycles in response to an entered error signal. The latter output signal is applied to a trigger circuit 55 to generate a control signal to separately control the turn-on time of the switching semiconductor element 40 at each half cycle of the power 10. As a result, the mean value of the current of the discharge lamp at each cycle is made zero.
