Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and extract ytrrium selectively in a high purity from other REE with good efficiency by bringing an aqueous solution containing HEDTA, Y, and a lanthanide into contact with an extraction solvent containing TBP and APA.
CONSTITUTION: HEDTA(hydroxyethylethtlenediamine triacetic acid) as a complexing agent is added to a rare earth element aqueous solution containing Y and a lanthanide and then the concentrations of each component and the pH of the solution are regulated; that is, the concentration of rare earth element is regulated usually to 0.005 to 2 g atom/1, that of HEDTA is regulated to more than equivalent to lanthanide and to 0.1 to 4 times equivalent to the total amount of rare earth elements, and the pH is regulated to 2.0 to 5. Then, an extraction solvent containing TBP and APA (an acid phosphate) of the formula(1) is diluted with an appropriate organic solvent as needed and then brought into contact with the aforesaid aqueous solution, whereby Y is concentrated in the organic solvent phase and also lanthanide is concentrated in the aqueous phase. The high purity Y present in the organic solvent phase is reversely extracted with a mineral acid. In the formula, a is 1 or 2, n is 6 to 15, and m is n, n-1, or n-2.
