Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce safely the titled dope having excellent performances, by dissolving water-moistened nitrocellulose in an OH group-free solvent which is azeotropically distillable with water and distilling off a solvent/water azeotropic mixture while adding an additional amount of the solvent so that the concentration of the dope is kept at a specified concentration.
CONSTITUTION: Water-moistened nitrocellulose is dissolved in an OH group-free solvent, b.p. ≤150°C, which is azeotropically distillable with water, e.g., methyl ethyl ketone, so that the concentration is 5W40wt%. Then, the solution is distilled at 70°C or below to remove a solvent/water azeotropic mixture while the solvent vapor is added so that the concentration of the solution is kept at a concentration ≤40wt%.
EFFECT: It is possible to obtain an anhydrous, alcohol-free nitrocellulose dope excellent in safety and performance.
USE: Modifier for magnetic tape binders.
