Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover economically uranium without affecting the quality of product, e.g., phosphatic fertilizer, etc., by treating uranium present in phosphoric acid solution obtained from the decomposition of rock phosphate with a mineral acid.
CONSTITUTION: A phosphoric acid solution is obtained by adding diatom earth to a solution obtained from the decomposition of rock phosphate with sulfuric acid, and then by filtering it to remove suspensions. Then, titanic acid is added to the phosphoric acid solution to bring titanic acid into contact with the phosphoric acid solution with stirring, whereupon uranikum dissolved in the phosphoric acid solution is adsorbed in the titanic acid. Then, the uranium-adsorbed titanic acid is separated from the phosphoric acid solution by filteration for example and then the uranium is recovered easily from the uranium-adsorbed titanic acid by the conventional method using an eluate containing ammonium carbonate, sodium carbonate, or sodium bicarbonate. The titanic acid deprived of uranium is recycled to adsorption process for reuse. The preferred proportion of titanic acid to add to the uranium- containing phosphoric acid solution is 3 to 6 % as titanium.
