Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the dissolution of a soluble component from a solid material, by coating or impregnating the solid material with a colloidal dispersion of a melamine-formaldehyde condensate.
CONSTITUTION: An acid (e.g. low-volatile oxycarboxylic acid such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, etc.) is added to an aqueous solution of a melamine-formaldehyde which is essentially unpolymerized or only extremely slightly condensed (pref. the molar ratio of the melamine to the formaldehyde is 1 to ≤1.5, considering the effect to workers during production), to obtain a solution having a pH of 0.1W5 when diluted to a solid content of 10%. The solution is aged to afford the colloidal dispersion of melamine-formaldehyde condensate. Dissolution of soluble component existing in or at the surface of a solid material can be prevented by coating or impregnating the solid material with the modified melamine resin obtained above.
