Abstract
PURPOSE: To keep a catalyst shell and a catalyst carrier sufficiently and surely sealed up for a long time, by absorbing the scatter in the dimensions of the carrier and the shell.
CONSTITUTION: Two exhaust pipes 2, 3 coupled to an engine are connected to a single exhaust pipe 4 which communicates with a muffler. A catalytic converter 5 is installed at the coupled ends of the exhaust pipes 2, 3, 4 and has the catalyst shell 7 consisting of half-split parts 71, 72 coupled to each other. The catalyst carrier 6 is provided in the catalyst shell 7. The flange 24a of a seal ring 24 is tightly fitted on the outside surface of the inlet part of the catalyst carrier 6. The outside surface of the main part 24b of the seal ring 24 is elastically and airtightly fitted on continuous inside projections 25 of the half-split parts 71, 72 of the shell. The scatter in the dimensions of the catalyst carrier 6 and the half-split parts of the shell is absorbed by the deformation of the main part 24b of the seal ring 24.
