Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform the gas-phase block copolymerization of an olefin monomer to a olefin polymer, stably and for a long time without interruption, by using a powdery olefin polymer containing active catalyst, having specific powder characteristics, and prepared by the liquid-phase polymerization in the presence of a specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst-containing olefin polymer powder having an angle of repose of 30W50° and an angle of slide of 25W50°, is prepared by the liquid phase polymerization of an olefin using a catalyst comprising (A) a Ti-containing solid component containing (a) a supported catalyst component prepared by the reaction of a solid Mg compound, a titanium tetrahalide, and an electron donative compound, or (b) a fine powder of a solid TiC13 catalyst complex obtained by precipitating a liquefied TiC13 with TiC14 in the presence of (thio)ether, and (B) an organo-aluminum compound. An olefin monomer is polymerized in contact with said powdery polymer essentially in the absence of liquid medium, at about 1W150 atm and about 50W100°C, to afford the objective block copolymer.
