Abstract

PURPOSE: To decrease the content of a water-insoluble diamine compound in the title compound useful as an intermediate of an amphoteric surface active agent for aqueous cosmetic composition, etc., by heating crude imidazole compound in the presence of a hydroxyalkyl-substituted ethylenediamine and an alkaline treating agent.
CONSTITUTION: An imidazoline compound containing a carboxylic acid diamide (1 mole) as an impurity, is heat-treated at ≥70°C, pref. 90W140°C, in the presence of a hydroxyalkyl-substituted ethylenediamine (pref. 1W10 mole) and an alkaline treating agent of formula MX (M is alkali metal; X is alkoxy, amino) (pref. 0.5W6 mole). The imidazoline compound can be prepared from an aliphatic carboxylic acid and a diamine compound by known process, and the hydroxyalkyl-substituted ethylenediamine is pref. same as the above diamine compound. The water-insoluble diamide compound is converted to the corresponding monoamide compound, which is made to water-soluble by the following amphoterizing reaction thereby maintaining the excellent characteristics of the amphoteric surface active agent.
