Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve thermal efficiency, by forming the axial symmetry of a combustion chamber in a ringed shape and by minimizing a S/V ratio by forming a central portion of a top surface of at least one of pistons in a projecting shape, in a uniflow system opposed piston type two-cycle engine.
CONSTITUTION: In a uniflow system opposed piston type two-cycle engine that mounts a pair of pistons 8, 9 into a cylinder 5 in opposite shapes, a central portion 12 of a top surface of said piston 8 is formed in a projecting shape while a concave portion 13 is conversely formed on a central portion of a top surface of said piston 9, and an approximate ringed combustion chamger 15 is shaped by the pistons 8, 9 and a semicircular groove 14 of the cylinder 5 when the pistons 8, 9 are located at top dead center (a condition shown in the figure) while a burnt gas chamber 16 is formed by said central portion 12 and the concave portion 13. Thus, the escape of heat can be reduced because the S/V ratio (the ratio of the wall area S to volume V of the combustion chamber 15) can be made small in the combustion chamber 15.
