Abstract

PURPOSE: An aqueous resin dispersion that is prepared by radical polymerization of vinyl monomers in the presence of an aqueous epoxy resin modifier, thus giving coating films with high adhesion, chemical resistance and corrosion resistance.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between an epoxy resin as glycidyl bisphenol A preferably with a molecular weight of less than about 1200 and an amino compound bearing carboxyl groups such as aminoacids or p-aminobenzoic acid is effected at about 100W150°C for 6W8 hr to form a resin bearing carboxyl groups (A). The resulting polymer is neutralized with about 0.5W1.5 equivalent amount, per carboxyl group, of an alkaline substance to form an aqueous dispersion. Then vinyl monomers as acrylate or methacrylate esters, aromatic monomers or nitrile monomers are added to the aqueous dispersion at a weight ratio of (A)/(B) 2:98W 60:40 and polymerized using relatively high hydrophilic organic peroxide as a initiator to produce said dispersion.
