Abstract

PURPOSE: To easily produce a highly active Pd or Pt catalyst reducing an aq. soln. of a Pd or Pt cpd. with an aq. soln. of SnCl2 acidified with hydrochloric acid in an excess of the theoretical amt.
CONSTITUTION: A Pd or Pt cpd. such as ammonium palladium chloride or potassium chloroplatinate is dissolved in water with heating together with carrier such as activated carbon, SiO2 or Al2O3. An aq. soln. of SnCl2 acidified with hydrochloric acid is then added dropwise with stirring in an excess of the theoretical amt. The resulting catalyst is filtered, washed with water, and dried. This method is carried out more simply and easily as compared to a conventional method, and the activity of the catalyst for reducing various org. cpds. is equal or superior to that of a commercially available typical catalyst.
