Abstract

PURPOSE: A specific calcium silicate is contacted with a mineral acid to remove calcium component, thereby to provide a plate-type, laminar silica having oringinal material configuration.
CONSTITUTION: Gyrolite calcium silicate having SiO2/CaO molar ratio of 1.4 to 1.55 is contacted with mineral acid to extract and to remove calcium component, obtaining silicon dioxide. As mineral acid, HCL, HNO3, H3PO4 are effectively used in concentration, equivalent to pH 4 or less, or more preferably, pH 1.3 to 3.0. The reaction temperature is in the range of 10 to 100°C, generally room temperature being sufficient. The reaction time of 30 minutes to 3 hours are normally satisfactory.
