Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure the seath thickness of a moving cable continuously with high resolution by judging that first and second reflected wave pulses have the specified amplitude, frequency and initial polarity, thence generating the signal of the time width equal to the time difference of both pulses.
CONSTITUTION: In an applied voltage pulse generator 5, trapezoidal wave pulses 13 are formed and are periodically inputted to an electro-acoustic transducer 6. A circular flat plate composed of barium titanate ceramics is built as a transducing element in the transducer 6 and has been set at, e.g., resonance frequency 5MHz. In the transducer 6, the exciting wave pulses of 5MHz are formed. These propagate in water 12 and arrive at a cable 10. The exciting pulses are then reflected by the surface of the cable and the bottom face and become the first, second reflected pulses having the time difference proportional to the sheath thickness. These pulses are again converted to electric signals by the transducer 6 and the signals are than inputted to a signal processing circuit 8 via amplifier 7. When judgement is accomplished in this circuit and in case the conditions are satisfied, the square wave pulses are outputted and are then converted to DC voltage by a D/A converter 9. This voltage is then recorded.
