Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover V in a waste catalyst used in hydrogenation of heavy oil as V chloride of high purity by chlorinating the catalyst with a selected chlorinating agent at a relatively low temp. without oxidation melt burning the catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The above waste catalyst contg. deposited metals such as V and a large amt. of C and S besides its catalyst metal and usually supported on alumina is washed with solvent such as kerosene or light oil in advance and treated as follows: without carrying out oxidation melt burning, the washed catalyst is chlorinated by contact to Cl2 and/or sulfur chloride such as S2Cl2 at below 350, esp. 0W300°C to separate a gas consisting of a V chloride such as VCl4 and S2Cl2 formed. The gas is then cooled to -20W-80°C to be separated into a VCl4-based solid and a S2Cl2- based liquid. The resulting VCl4 or VCl3 is suitable for use as raw material for catalyst, metallic V or ferrovanadium.
