Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent overheating of purifying catalyst of a compound converter and to maintain the active temperature of modifying catslyst by disposing an exhaust gas purifying catalytic layer and a fuel modifying catalytic layer adjacently.
CONSTITUTION: There are arranged a plurality of exhaust gas purifying tubes 2 containing exhaust gas purifying catalytic layers 21 via supporting plates 5 and fuel modifying catalytic layers 31 filled between the tubes 2 to form a fuel modifying chamber 3 in a housing 1 connected via an inlet 20 to the exhaust manifold of an engine (not shown). Thus, the layers 31 is heated by the reaction heat of the layers 31 to modify the fuel introduced from the outer periphery of the housing 1 through metal mesh 4 into the chamber 3 into modified gas of hydrogen or the like for short time and to thus introduce it into a suction manifold (not shown).
