Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to effect the reproduction in such an expansion ratio as is complementary with a suitably selected compression ratio thereby to prevent the deterioration of the S/N ratio by writing the information corresponding to compression and expansion ratios in a special recording track simultaneously with the recording operation.
CONSTITUTION: The recording signals Vi fed to a terminal 10 have their gain controlled by a variable gain amplifier circuit VCA 11 to be controlled in its gain by a level sensor circuit, which is composed of a logarithmic conversion circuit 12 and a variable gain amplifier 13. The gain of the variable gain amplifier circuit 13 determines the compression ratio upon the recording operation and is indicated in the form of a control voltage by a compression and expansion ratio adjusting circuit 14. This voltage is subjected to V-f conversion by an oscillatory circuit 15 so that it is recorded in the special recording track of a tape recorder 17. Upon the reproduction, the reproduced signals from the recorded signals are subjected to f-V conversion to detect the compression ratio upon the recording operation so that the gain of a VCA 18 is so determined that the expansion ratio during the reproduction may be complementary with the compression ratio. As a result, the original sounds can be reproduced in high fidelity no matter how the compression ratio is determined.
