Abstract

PURPOSE: To continuously form good penetration beads, by employing the flux, to emit a radiation sound at a specified temperature, for the backing metal at the weld zone, and by detecting the quantity of radiation sound generated owing to the heat of penetration, on purpose to control the welding condition.
CONSTITUTION: On the backside of the weld zone are attached a special flux 2 and the usual flux 3. For the special flux 2 is employed such flux as to be destructed by the thermal shock within a temperature range and to emit a radiation sound (for example, granules of alumina which are destructed at above 800°C). AE (radiation sound) sensor 4 is attached to the sheet 1 to be welded, and the output of this AE sensor 4 is transmitted to the AE monitor 5. The AE monitor 5 detects the number of AE count generated by the destruction of the special flux 2. This number of AE count is inputted to the controller 6 for the welding power source, and is checked upon whether it is in the suitable range or not. According to the result of this check, the welding condition of the welding power source 7 is controlled to give a suitable shape of penetration beads to the weld metal 9.
