Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a device excelling in the display durability without requiring complicated additional circuits, by providing a display electrode, a counter electrode for coloring used when developing color, and a counter electrode for discoloring used when sweeping out color, in an electrochromic display device.
CONSTITUTION: A display electrode 1, a counter electrode for coloring 2, and a counter electrode for discoloring 2' are disposed in a cell 3, in which is accommodated a coloring-discoloring medium 5, and are connected to a battery 4 through a switch 4'. When the switch 4' is connected as shown by the solid line, the display electrode becomes - and the counter electrode for coloring 2 becomes +, so that the color is developed on the display electrode 1. When the switch 4' is changed as shown by the broken line, the display electrode 1 becomes + and the counter electrode for discoloring 2' becomes -, so that the color on the display electrode 1 disappears (at the same time, the color is developed on the counter electrode for discoloring 2'). That is, by dividing the counter electrodes into one for coloring and the other for discoloring, it is possible to use a metal oxide electrode highly resistant to oxidation in the counter electrode for coloring, and a metal electrode high resistant to reduction in the counter electrode for discoloring, so that the repetitive durability of the device may be improved.
