Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower apparent power of a discharge lamp to which main inductance is connected in series, by connecting a series circuit of capacitor, auxiliary inductance and filament transformer in parallel to the discharge lamp, and connecting the main inductance and the auxiliary inductance by way of electromagnetic coupling. CONSTITUTION:When current is passed through a circuit constituted by AC power source 1, main coil 10, capacitor 11, auxiliary coil 12 and filament transformer 13, series resonance is caused by main coil 10 and capaciror 11, and a high voltage is impressed between terminals of a discharge lamp. At the same time, filament of the lamp is heated by filament heating windings 4, 5, thereby lighting the lamp 6. After the lamp is lighted, a phase-advancing current is passed through capacitor 11, auxiliary coil 12 and filament transformer 13, and a composite current of the phase- advancing current and phase-lagging current is passed through the main coil 10 connected to the auxiliary coil 12 by way of electromagnetic coupling, which results in improvement of power factor and reduction of apparent power of the lamp.
