Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate the drawback of capability of only dichroic display thereby to make color display possible by making use of electric thermooptical effects of a smectic crystal, to which a multichroic dye is added and which has a positive dielectric anisotropy.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal cell 15 is heated or gradually cooled all over its surface to a uniformly colored condition by a heat source 19 or suitable heating means. Then, while an AC voltage of about 20 volts is being impressed upon the whole surface of the cell 15 by a power source 24, the hot ray from the source 19 such as an YAG laser beam 25 is allowed to transmit, shielded or deflected by means of an optical modulating deflector 20 in accordance with the display information input so that is scanns and irradiates the cell 15 through a lens 21 and a dichroic mirror 22. As a result, a non-colored transparent information pattern is writted in the cell 15. Then, the pattern is projected and displayed on a screen 18 by means of a light source 16, a linear polarizing plate 23 and a lens 17. When the cell 15 is heated and gradually cooled, the pattern is erased.
