Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the lightning proofing capacity by means of a lightning arrester inserted between the transmission line and the steel tower, and in addition, possibly between the transmission line and the overhead ground wire.
CONSTITUTION: A lightning arrester 5 is inserted between respective steel towers 1 and power transmission lines 31 to 33 and in addition a lightning arrester 6 is inserted between an overhead ground wire and an upper phase transmission line 31 within a span between the steel towers. The lightning arrester uses a resistance material with a good non-linearity such as high temperature sintered element mainly made of zinc oxide so that it is able to perform function against a direct lightning attack of about 100 kA. With such an arrangement, the lightning arrester 5 is actuated to protect the transmission lines 31 to 33 against a lightning stroke to the aerial ground wire 2 around the steel towers while the lightning arresters 5 and 6 are actuated to protect the transmission lines 31, 32 and 33 against a lightning stroke within the span between steel towers.
