Abstract

PURPOSE: Electrolytic iron powder is oxidized to render it more easily into a crushable iron oxide state, then finely crushed, and again reduced to form finer iron powder than conventionally available, this process providing an unexpensive procedure to produce alkaline battery electrodes having high capacitance and long service life.
CONSTITUTION: Electrolytic iron powder is oxidized to iron oxide, at least the surface of which is easily pulverizable. The iron oxide is crushed into powder, preferably finer than 325 mesh, and reduced to iron powder under flowing H2 at a temperature of about 700°C. The resulted iron powder is screened through 325 mesh and formed into alkaline battery iron electrodes. Powders made by conventional method have larger diameters and small surfaces to provide only insufficient performance electrodes. The inventive method offers relatively economical way to provide very fine iron powder for electrodes with excellent discharge performance and cycle service life.
