PURPOSE: Penicillin oxides and cephalosporin oxides of formula I[R is amino acid residue; R1 is H, a salt-forming cation or a carboxy protectorforming group; R2 and R3 are H, alkyl or aryl; A is H, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, etc.; X is oxygen atom having S-configuration or R-configuration; Y is O or S; Z is II or III; R4 is H, cyano, azide, -O-(organic group) or -S-(organic group)], e.g. benzhydryl-(1S)-6-[D(-)-α-(4-ethyl-2,3-dioxo-1-piperazinylcarbonylamino)phenylacetamido]-penicillanate-1-oxide.
