Abstract

1345747 Glass reinforced resin composition MITSUBISHI RAYON CO Ltd 7 Sept 1971 [12 Sept 1970] 41668/71 Headings C3P and C3R A glass reinforced thermoplastic resin composition comprises 5-50% by weight of glass reinforcing material and 50-95% of resin component comprising the reaction product of 1-99% of a polyolefin modified with an unsaturated carboxylic acid or derivative with 99-1% of at least one amine, polyamideforming substance or polyamide, and 0-98% of an unmodified polyolefin. In examples the polyolefin is polyethylene or polypropylene and it is modified with maleic anhydride or fumaric acid, and the product reacted with #-caprolactam, nylon 6-6, or nylon 6. The polyolefin is reacted with the unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride in the presence of benzoyl peroxide in a mixed acetone/xylene solvent and the product is reacted with the polyamide or precursor at about 250‹. The resulting reaction product is mixed with the glass-reinforcing material which may be glass fibre or glass powder or beads. The glass reinforcement may be treated with an organosilane such as γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane.
