The distance signals are modified by correction signals to compensate for deformities in the pattern. The smallest modified distance signal indicates the reference pattern most nearly matching the input pattern. The system employs M circuits, each as indicated in Fig. 2, for the recognition of M patterns. Each circuit includes a first section comprising operational amplifiers 14, 18 and M further sections comprising amplifiers 22, 27 ... As shown M = 2. Signals Xi (i=1-N) representing the pattern are fed to N squaring circuits 11, the resulting signals being summed and the sum passing to operational amplifier 34. Signals Xi are also fed to weighting resistors 15 which feed amplifier 18. Amplifier 18 also receives a reference signal via resistor 16. The output of amplifier 18 is passed to amplifier 34. If there were no other input to amplifier 34 its output would represent the distance between the input pattern and the reference pattern. Signals Xi are fed to weighted resistors 19, 24 ... of each of the further sections to provide one input of amplifiers 22, 24 ... whose other input is the output of weighted resistors 20, 25 ..., which are fed by a reference voltage. The outputs of amplifiers 23, 28 ... feed amplifier 34 to modify the distance signal. The modified distance signal from each amplifier 34 passes to a circuit which determines which one is the smallest, to identify the pattern.
