Abstract

1364090 Treating exhaust gas TOYO KOGYO CO Ltd 30 Dec 1971 [30 Dec 1970] 60848/71 Heading F1B An I. C. engine comprises an exhaust gas purifying reactor, means for detecting warm-up of the engine and/or the reactor and an engine speed control means for maintaining the engine speed above 2500 r.p.m., the control means being responsive to the detecting means so that upon initial starting of the engine from cold the engine speed is held above 2500 r.p.m. until the engine and/or reactor have warmed up. An I. C. engine 1 is connected to a reactor 2 which is supplied with secondary air for oxidizing unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. The reactor may contain a catalyst and is connected to a further catalytic reactor by a pipe 4 and by a further pipe 6 to a silencer 5. In parallel with the tail pipe 7 is a further silencer 8, through which the gas is diverted by a valve 47 when the engine is cold. A gear lever 18 is connected to a neutral switch 19 through a holding device H so that the switch 19 closes only when the gear is in neutral and the starter motor switch has been operated. If the engine stops the switch 19 opens and remains open until the starter switch is operated. A thermosensor 20 energizes a solenoid 21 when the engine has warmed up and opens a normally-closed switch 22. A further switch 24 is connected to a diaphragm 25 which when the engine has started is affected by the suction in the inlet pipe 11 and duct 23 and closes the switch 24. The three switches 19, 22 and 24 are in series in an electrical head supplying power to a solenoidoperated valve 28, which when energized opens the valve-member 30 and allows the vacuum in pipe 11 to act on diaphragms 36 and 37 and move the throttle valve 12 and choke valve 15 to a partly open position, determined by adjustable stop screws 42 and 43. The engine then runs at a speed (e.g. 2500 r.p.m.) which is higher than the speed at which the engine runs due to the action of the choke alone. When the engine reaches a predetermined temperature the thermosensor 20 opens the switch 22 and the valve-member 30 returns to the closed position. Similarly, if the gear lever is moved out of the neutral position, the switch 19 is opened. The vacuum in the pipe 23 also acts on a diaphragm 45 which moves the valve 47 to divert the gases through silencer 8. To minimize engine wear due to fast running immediately after starting a pump 52 delivers lubricating oil to a valve 54 which when opened by a solenoid 56, in parallel with solenoid 28, allows oil to pass directly into the induction pipe.
