る。BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a method of producing and / or modulating polarized light used for a display. One of the major drawbacks of color liquid crystal display screens is the inefficient use of the input energy as a result of light loss in polarizers and filters. The described invention addresses this drawback, but also includes applications in monochrome displays. The present invention uses a chiral liquid crystal, that is, a liquid crystal having a helical structure. These are exemplified by chiral smectic gradients such as chiral nematics (cholesteric or N * , where * indicates chirality) and chiral smectic C phase (SmC * ). Both of these phases can have a helical structure. The helix resembles a somewhat thread-like twist and has a pitch P associated with the twist that is the repeating distance along the helix. It corresponds to a rotation of 2π radians around the helix. Color displays must be able to emit light in the bandwidth of 380 to 780 nanometers. This wide range of electromagnetic waves is a source of many frustrations and technical inconveniences for designers of thin liquid crystal displays for use in products such as laptop computers and televisions. A particularly large problem given is associated with the white light filter system employed to create red, blue and green pixels, so that only about 4% of the energy input is available to watch television. That is not surprising. In order to combat this energy loss, attempts have been made to increase the light projected forward toward the viewer using cholesteric liquid crystals. A promising approach uses "cholesteric mirrors", the use of which is made by the reflective and transmissive properties of cholesteric liquid crystals when used in connection with polarization. In the basic cholesteric mirror approach, unpolarized light from the light source 1 travels straight toward the cholesteric liquid crystal layer 23, as shown schematically in FIG. Such liquid crystals transmit light of wavelengths that differ significantly from their pitch (taking into account the refractive index of the material) and light that is circularly polarized in the opposite direction at wavelengths near that pitch. Circularly polarized light in the same direction as light of the correct wavelength is reflected. Thus, the layer acts as a filter. Monochromatic light (unpolarized light) containing both right-handed and left-handed polarized light impinges on the chiral filter substrate 23 and, as shown, has the same (left) optical rotation characteristics as the chiral liquid crystal (left). Light of handedness is almost completely reflected and light of the opposite optical rotation characteristic almost completely crosses the filter. In order to increase the light intensity, the reflector 11 (either diffuse or specular) will be placed behind a filter, either before or after the light emitter. Circularly polarized light undergoes a π phase conversion by a reflector that effectively reverses its optical rotation characteristics, and passes through a filter. It can be used to enhance the overall transmitted light. For a description of this device, see Bee Kerlenwig and A. Koge, SID France Conference Report, August 31-September 3, 1993. The right-handed circularly polarized light that crosses the filter 23 can be modulated. In the above conference report, twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal 12 is used, and a voltage can be applied to the liquid crystal layer by electrodes on each surface. This liquid crystal layer is equivalent in material and thickness to a half-wave plate when no voltage is applied. Super twisted nematic (STN) can be used in place of the TN liquid crystal, and the operation is the same for the present purpose. The effect of the half-wave plate is to reverse the optical rotation characteristics of the incident light, as shown. If, on the other hand, a voltage is applied to the liquid crystal, the right-handed polarized light is transmitted unchanged. Thus, by placing a dextrorotatory cholesteric mirror on the opposite side of the TN layer, light is blocked or transmitted depending on whether or not a voltage is applied. While this approach has the great advantage that it works well for monochromatic displays and does not require polarizers, far from 100% efficiency, several cholesteric layers are needed to cover the wavelength range. Not suitable for color display as needed. This is one of the reasons why cholesteric liquid crystals are clearly not often used for displays. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Broadly, the present invention uses cholesteric liquid crystals to block or transmit circularly polarized light and can be used to produce color displays. This comprises, in one aspect, a system consisting of means for providing circularly polarized light, a modulator made of cholesteric liquid crystal to which light travels straight, and a modulator operable to selectively transmit or block circularly polarized light. Is achieved by Such a device provides an essentially monochromatic output which is suitable for itself for some purposes. However, it is particularly effective when the light is substantially monochromatic, especially ultraviolet light, and once modulated, activates a material capable of emitting visible light or alters its reflective or absorbing properties, or Otherwise used to produce output. Materials of this type are exemplified by phosphors when radioactive. Here, reference is made to WO 95/27920 for this type of display. The present invention can produce both monochrome and full color display screens when incorporated into a display device. As mentioned above, the input circularly polarized light can be produced by a conventional "cholesteric mirror" device. The present invention can provide a low-loss liquid crystal modulator that does not require a polarizer, and furthermore, does everything without anything similar to a polarization detector, and, in the simplest case, filters and modulators. Just need. This means that the liquid crystal directly blocks the light, rather than simply changing its polarization state to then block the light by other optical elements, as is done, for example, with conventional TN-type liquid crystal displays. Because it can be. The liquid crystal can be, for example, a chiral liquid crystal of a predetermined pitch used in connection with monochromatic or near monochromatic light, where monochromatic or near monochromatic light is exemplified by invisible short wavelength electromagnetic waves usually referred to as ultraviolet light. You. The method preferably uses ultraviolet light at a wavelength of 365 nm, and a typical average refractive index of 1.6 requires a chiral liquid crystal with a pitch of 230 nm. Such pitches are known as chiral nematic liquid crystals (N * ) and chiral smectic (SmC * ) materials. For the method to be effective, it is preferred that the input unpolarized light be parallel. This can be done using a lens system. However, since embodiments of the present invention typically do not require any polarizers, in embodiments such as those using phosphor output elements, these elements can be located inside the liquid crystal cell. This greatly reduces the need for parallelism and considerably simplifies the device. Ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 365 nm is often ideal as the second radiator in the form of a phosphor, and a single pitch chiral liquid crystal can be used. For a selected wavelength of 365 nm, a typical pitch value in μm is It is. However, another possibility is to use shorter wavelength light, for example blue light, to operate a phosphor that emits a longer wavelength, such as red or green, which reduces the use of ultraviolet light. Will avoid. In a different application of the invention, a cholesteric mirror system can be used to produce linearly polarized light without using a conventional polarizer, for example by adding a quarter wave plate. This linearly polarized light, as used in conventional twisted nematic and super twisted nematic displays, can be switched by the electro-optic effect of a liquid crystal that requires linearly polarized light, resulting in ferroelectricity, electroclinic and birefringence. Many other electro-optic effects can be applied, such as simple (untwisted) nematic planar homeotropic switching. Some dichroic effects can be made effective by aligning the directions of absorbing light in the direction of polarizing light, for example, in connection with nematic and ferroelectric liquid crystals without twist. Thus, in another aspect, the invention provides a source of substantially monochromatic ultraviolet light, a first cholesteric mirror for transmitting light of one optical rotation characteristic, and for selectively changing the polarization of transmitted light. And a modulator comprising a second cholesteric mirror for transmitting or blocking selected polarized light. In one version, since there is a quarter-wave plate between the cholesteric mirror and the liquid crystal modulator, the modulator can be a conventional TN, STN or other birefringent liquid crystal, with the intermediate light being linear. Polarized. Also, the transmitted light can be used to operate a secondary emitter, such as a phosphor, especially for color displays. Thus, the light source of the present invention can be used to produce energized ultraviolet light, phosphor radiation, emissive displays. This overcomes the difficulties with the known FIG. 1 apparatus for color displays. DETAILED DESCRIPTION Embodiments of the present invention includes a configuration using either polarization or circular or linear with modulator is described with reference to the following figures. FIG. 1 shows the principle of a known cholesteric mirror. FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a first embodiment of the present invention using two cholesteric mirrors in series, one as a polarizing filter and the other as a modulator. FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a second embodiment of the present invention using circular and linearly polarized light in connection with either conventional or chiral polarizers. FIG. 4 is a cross-section of the very device showing the device of FIG. 2 for a larger area as part of the display. In FIG. 2, light source 1 produces unpolarized, non-parallel electromagnetic waves, which in this embodiment are substantially monochromatic or narrow band ultraviolet light. The light passes through the lens 5 from which the display device can be an element of the lens array, from which the light is seen as unpolarized collimated light 9. Levorotatory circularly polarized light is symbolically indicated at 15, and dextrorotatory circularly polarized light is symbolically indicated at 19. Light impinges on a surface 21 of a cholesteric mirror 23 containing a dextrorotatory chiral liquid crystal material. The right-handed polarized light 19 is reflected at the surface 21 as shown at 6, while the left-handed polarized light 15 passes through the cholesteric mirror 23, so that the cholesteric mirror 23 acts as a kind of filter. The helix of the liquid crystal is indicated by 8. For display purposes, the device consists essentially of a circular polarizing filter and a chiral modulator 34. The helix of the modulator should be of the same optical rotation characteristics as the light striking it. Circular polarizing filters are not limited to being switched if there is no need for modulation at this stage. The light wavelength (λ) satisfies the following equation. λ = n × p Equation (2) where n is the refractive index, and p is the pitch of the chiral material of both the filter and the modulator. When no voltage is applied to the modulator, almost all light of the corresponding optical rotation characteristic is reflected, and little light passes through the modulator. When an electric field is applied to the modulator, the pitch unwinds above a threshold given by: Here, K 22 is the twist elastic constant, Δε is the dielectric anisotropy, and E 0 is the dielectric constant of free space. The light is transmitted. The upper part of FIG. 2 shows a cell with no electric field applied and thus no light is transmitted. When the pixel cell is in the "off" state, the helix structure is maintained as at 34a, while when an electric field is applied across the cholesteric cell, the helix unwinds and the liquid crystal enters a nematic phase as at 34b . For pixel 34a, the left-handed polarized light is reflected as indicated at 26 and the light entering nematic pixel 34b is provided with a left-handed polarized light, symbolically indicated at 15, and a cholesteric mirror as indicated at 30. To Penetrate. The circular polarization filter 23 has a helix having an optical rotation characteristic suitable for the helix of the modulator, and can be formed of an easy-to-use chiral substance having a pitch length satisfying the formula (2), for example, a polymeric substance. This system is analogous to circular polarization of a standard display system using linearly polarized light and a twisted nematic liquid crystal with the advantage of not requiring any polarization detector. The illustrated device emits monochromatic circularly polarized light 30 and can be used directly, for example, for display. However, further advantages can be obtained if this essentially monochromatic light is used to turn on an output element (not shown), such as a phosphor, which in turn emits light to the viewer. . In this case, the phosphor can be, for example, an RGB phosphor similar to the phosphor used in CRT displays, which means that an efficient color display can be produced. This configuration and its advantages are described, for example, in WO 95/27920 (Crossland et al.). FIG. 3 shows a configuration in which conversion from circularly polarized light to linearly polarized light is performed, and the modulator supports linearly polarized light. Here, as in FIG. 1, the light source 1 is shown at 3 and produces a narrow band of unpolarized, non-parallel light, which again enters the lens 5, which is a unit part of the lens array. A collimated unpolarized light is created and is shown at 9. Levorotatory circularly polarized light is symbolically indicated at 15, and dextrorotatory circularly polarized light is indicated at 10. The collimated light thus hits the base 21 of the cholesteric mirror 23. This mirror contains a dextro-enantiomeric cholesteric liquid crystal (dextro-twist). The collimated, unpolarized dextrorotatory polarization component is reflected from the base 21 of the cholesteric mirror 23, and the levorotatory polarization component is shown at 27 with the symbolic reference 15 and passes through the mirror. Up to this point, the device corresponds to the device of FIG. In this embodiment, the collimated left-handed polarization component passes through the quarter-wavelength substrate indicated at 31 and becomes visible as linearly polarized light 35, which is symbolically indicated at 39. Light 35 enters a half-wave plate (optimal condition) modulation substrate 43, which may be a conventional (eg, TN) structure, and transmits through two types of pixels, indicated by 43a and 43b. In FIG. 3, the switch of the pixel 43a is off, and the switch of the pixel 43b is on. The polarization transmitted through the pixel 43a is maintained unchanged, while the polarization transmitted through 43b is rotated 90 degrees, thus changing its linear polarization. The original polarization is symbolically indicated at 39 and the changed polarization is symbolically indicated at 47. The respective linearly polarized forms of light are indicated at 35 and 45, respectively. Light transmitted through the device is indicated generally at 44 and can be processed in one of two paths, indicated at 44a and 44b. If the process 44a has a precisely oriented fixed axis and selects linear polarization in both 35 and 45 directions through the quarter-wave plate indicated at 53, then both forms of linear polarization are Converted to circularly polarized light. The unmodulated linear form 35 is converted to levorotatory circularly polarized light 54 with the symbolic sign shown at 15 and the linear form 45 is converted to dextrorotatory circularly polarized light 56 with the symbolic sign 19. . The two forms of circularly polarized light strike the base 65 of the further cholesteric mirror 59. Cholesteric mirrors include levorotatory antipodes (twisted) liquid crystals. The left-handed circularly polarized light is reflected from the mirror base 65, and the right-handed polarized light is transmitted through the cholesteric mirror 59. The light that has become visible is dextrorotatory polarization, indicated at 61 and symbolically at 19. Of course, the mirror 59 can be dextrorotatory, in which case the image is "negative". This operation relates to the Kerlenwig and Koche types (FIG. 1). If option 44b selects a conventional linear polarizer, indicated at 55, that excludes polarization 35, which has the direction symbolically indicated at 39, polarization 45, with the direction indicated symbolically at 47, , 61 ′ through the polarizer 55 and is made available for viewing by the viewer 70. In this alternative, some have a simple structure, but retain some of the advantages of having a cholesteric mirror instead of the first polarizer used in conventional TN displays. FIG. 4 shows a portion of the display along the lines of FIG. For best results, light 15 should be collimated, but for clarity this is not shown. The transmission cells of modulator 64, ie, those that are energized, allow circularly polarized light 63 to pass through for monochromatic display or further processing. As mentioned above, in an active display, the output light 59, 61, 63 may be present, not shown, for example, along the line indicated in International Application No. PCT / GB95 / 770 (Crossland et al.). An array of possible second light emitting elements, i.e. RGB phosphor dots. Alternatively, they can be elements whose absorption / reflection properties are altered by the action of ultraviolet light. At this time, they produce the desired color display by appropriate modulation of the ultraviolet light. This solves the problem of producing a color display using a highly wavelength-selective cholesteric liquid crystal. However, the invention is not limited to the use of color displays or ultraviolet light. Numerous variants of the explicitly shown device are possible. The collimator is not necessarily a lens or an array of lenses, and may have other applications comparable to a display.
