And a method for controlling capacitance and impedance arising from integrated conductors in a suspension of the invention. More particularly, the present invention relates to an integrated suspension and conductor structure, such that the suspension includes a cavity, whereby the suspension partially supplements the conductor structure, and a method of making the same. Background Modern disk drives typically include a rotating hard storage disk and a number of concentric data storage tracks on each recording surface of the disk by positioning data transducers at various radial positions relative to the axis of rotation of the disk. And a head positioner to specify. This head positioner is generally called an actuator. Although numerous actuator configurations are known in the art, in-line rotary voice coil actuators are currently most frequently used. This is due to the simplicity, high performance, and the ability to mass balance around the axis of rotation of the actuator, which is important to make the actuator less sensitive to perturbations. . A closed loop servo system is used to operate the actuator to position the head relative to the disk surface. The read / write transducer may be of a single element design or a two element design, which is typically located on a ceramic slider structure having an air bearing surface to support the transducer a short distance from the surface of the moving medium. Is done. Single element designs typically require two wire connections, while two element designs require four wire connections. In particular, a magnetoresistive (MR) head typically requires four wires. The combination of an air bearing slider and a read / write transducer is also known as a read / write head or a recording head. The slider is typically mounted in a gimbaled flexure structure mounted at the far end of the suspension load beam structure. A spring biases the load beam, and thereby the head, toward the disk, and the air pressure under the head moves the head away from the disk. Therefore, this equilibrium distance determines the “flying height” of the head. By utilizing such "air bearings" to support the head away from the disk surface, the head operates at the head / disk interface in a hydrodynamic lubrication mode rather than a boundary lubrication mode. Air bearings maintain the spacing between the transducer and media, which reduces the efficiency of the transducer, but thus avoiding direct connections improves the reliability and useful life of the head and disk components . Nevertheless, however, the ever-increasing demand for area densification may require the head to operate in a pseudo-contact mode, and even a boundary lubrication mode. The disk drive industry has progressively reduced the size and mass of the slider structure to reduce the moving mass of the actuator assembly and to allow the transducer to operate closer to the disk surface. Reducing the moving mass leads to improved seek performance, and operating the transducer near the disk surface leads to improved transducer efficiency and, therefore, area densification. The size (and thus the mass) of the slider is usually characterized on the basis of a so-called standard 100% slider (mini-slider). The terms 70%, 50%, and 30% sliders (microsliders, nanosliders, and pico-sliders, respectively) are therefore more recent, with linear dimensions measured by the applicable ratios to the linear dimensions of standard mini-sliders. Of the low-mass slider of FIG. Smaller slider structures typically require a higher compliance gimbal, and thus the inherent stiffness of the conductor wires attached to the slider can create large deflection effects. To reduce the effects of the inherent stiffness or deflection of this wire, integrated flexure / conductor structures have been proposed. This effectively integrates the wire with the insulating flexible polymeric flexure so that the conductor is exposed at the bonding pad located near the head at the far end of the flexure. U.S. Patent No. 5,006,946 to Matsuzaki discloses an example of such an arrangement. While such a wiring configuration enjoys some performance and assembly advantages, the incorporation of the disclosed flexible polymeric resin material in flexure and gimbal structures creates a number of design challenges. For example, the thermal expansion characteristics of resin materials are different from those of prior art stainless steel structures, and the long-term durability of such resin structures, including the required adhesive layers, is not known. Therefore, hybrid stainless steel flexures and conductor structures have been proposed that incorporate most of the advantages of the flex circuit flexure structure with integrated conductors while remaining nearly compatible with prior art manufacturing and load beam mounting methods. Such hybrid designs typically include a stainless steel flexure having insulating and conductive layers arranged to electrically interconnect the head to associated drive electronics such as preamplifier chips and readout channel circuits. Used. These hybrid flexure designs use relatively long conductors, which extend from the bonding pads at the head mounting end at the distal end of the flexure to the proximal end of the flexure and from the read / write head to the associated suspension structure. Provides a conductive path along the length to the preamplifier or readout channel chip. Because the conductor is very close to the conductive stainless steel flexure structure that is grounded to the load beam, but is electrically insulated, the capacitance of the conductor to ground is smaller than that of the conventional discrete discrete type. Increased compared to wire-to-conductor structures. This increased capacitance is prone to adversely affect the performance of the read / write heads, conductors, and preamplifier systems, and therefore exhibits a reduced capacitance to ground that is manufacturable, reliable, flexure and An integrated structure of the conductor is required. The invention described herein is, inter alia, a flexure for a suspension in a disk drive, wherein the integrated conductor structure is configured to limit parasitic capacitance between the conductor structure and other portions of the suspension structure. And a method for manufacturing the same. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A suspension assembly according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention includes a flexure having one or more shaped cavities and an integrated conductor extending along the flexure substantially adjacent to the cavities. These integrated conductors replace prior art discrete stranded wire pairs, insulated conductor wires, which typically extend along the length of the associated suspension. The size and shape of the flexure cavity, as well as the conductor geometry, are controlled to reduce the undesirable effects of capacitance on the ground of the conductor. Further, the conductor traces may be configured to reduce the mutual capacitance of the traces. The present invention provides improved electrical performance without substantially affecting the mechanical performance of the suspension. A general object of the present invention is to provide a low profile, robust and reliable suspension with integrated conductors for electrically interconnecting a read / write head to associated read / write circuits. It is to be. This overcomes the limitations and disadvantages of the prior art. A more specific object of the present invention is to provide a method for controlling the capacitance or impedance of an integrated flexure / conductor structure for use with a read / write head in a disk drive. Yet another object of the invention is to provide an integrated flexure and conductor structure that facilitates respective optimization of the capacitance and impedance of the conductors of both the read and write elements of a two-element read / write head. And a method for producing the same. Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved suspension for supporting a read / write head in a drive. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides an integrated flexure / conductor structure comprising a gimbal mounted transducer mounted on a slider and including an exposed conductive electrical bonding pad positioned near a slider mounting area at a distal end of the conductive flexure. To provide an economical and reliable way to electrically interconnect The bonding pads and associated conductors are electrically isolated from the flexure by a dielectric layer attached to the flexure having the conductor extending substantially coplanarly along the flexure surface. The flexure includes one or more cavities, and the conductor is configured to extend adjacent the cavities. The conductor aspect ratios and spacing between conductors can be adjusted to maintain low capacitance to ground while simultaneously reducing mutual capacitance between conductors. The cavity boundaries may be configured to prevent discontinuous impedance changes along the path of the conductor. These and other objects, advantages, aspects and features of the present invention will be more fully appreciated and understood in consideration of the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments, presented in conjunction with the accompanying drawings. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring to the drawings, the same or corresponding parts are denoted by the same reference numerals throughout the drawings. FIG. 1 is a plan view of an integrated flexure / conductor structure 10 according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The flexure / conductor structure 10 includes a substantially flat stainless steel flexure member 12, which is approximately 20 microns thick and which is used during manufacturing and assembly for precision alignment of components. Includes holes 14 and 15. A pair of approximately 10 micron thick copper conductive traces form part of the conductor structure 16, which extends from a proximal end 17 of the flexure member 12 to a distal end 18 supporting the head of the flexure member 12. . The conductor structure 16 is inserted between the conductive traces of the conductor structure and the stainless steel flexure member 12 to prevent shorting of the conductive traces of the conductor structure 16 (eg, a 10 micron) thin insulating base film 25 (simplified). (Not shown for clarity, but shown in FIG. 2). Flexure member 12 includes one or more cavities 20 positioned adjacent the path along which conductor structure 16 is routed, thereby providing a capacitance between the conductor structure and stainless steel flexure member 12. Is reduced. Accordingly, the present invention provides a method for controlling the capacitance resulting from the integration of conductor structure 16 with stainless steel flexure member 12. As is well known in the art, excess conductor or lead capacitance adversely affects signals traveling between the associated read / write head and the preamplifier circuit. Further, at sufficiently high frequencies, the conductor structure 16 follows the signal path of the conductor structure 16 to serve as a transmission line for signals passing between the read / write head and the read channel electronics. The cavity geometry is an important factor in controlling and preventing sudden changes in impedance. Discontinuous changes in impedance tend to create unwanted reflection effects in the transmission line. FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of flexure / conductor structure 10 of FIG. 1 taken along section line AA. The conductor structure 16 in this embodiment includes a pair of conductive traces 22 and an insulating polyimide (flexible polymeric material) layer 24 over the cavity 20 to provide support for the conductive traces. In this embodiment, the pairs of traces are configured as close as possible as the manufacturing process reliably allows, so as to reduce the magnitude of the mutual capacitance between the conductors. Although not strictly required, an additional insulating layer of about 4 microns thickness may be used as a protective overcoat for traces 22. Preferably, the cavity provides a smooth or relatively continuous change in the cross section of the cavity 20 along the length of the flexure / conductor structure 10, thereby providing an impedance change along the signal path defined by the conductor structure 16. Must be molded to prevent sudden transitions. In the area where the boundary of the cavity 20 crosses the trace 22, it is desirable to either bend or angle the boundary so that the boundary does not cross the trace at right angles, so that the conductor structure 16 Is more gradual along the transmission line defined by Further, the internal boundaries of the flexure member defining cavity 20 can be clipped down (as shown in FIG. 2 or FIG. 2A) to provide a smoother change in impedance along the signal path. is there. Numerous methods for laminating and patterning stainless steel sheet stock, dielectric films, and conductors are known in the art. Additionally, methods for depositing and patterning dielectrics and conductors on stainless steel are also known in the art. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the conductor traces 22 are plated and photo-printed, rather than laminated and etched, so that the insulating and conductive trace layers are formed of a stainless steel flexure member machine. It can be manufactured to be thin preferably without substantially affecting the mechanical properties. After the insulator and conductor structures are formed, the flexure and cavity contours are selectively etched to complete the formation of the integrated flexure / conductor structure. FIG. 3 shows a fully assembled head gimbal assembly (HGA) 30 according to the present invention, which includes a base plate 32 for mounting HGA to an actuator arm in a disk drive, and a read / write. And a load beam 34 for supplying a load force on the head 36. The head 36 is fixed to the distal end 18 of the flexure / conductor structure 10 and the transducer elements (not shown) of the read / write head 36 are electrically interconnected to the conductive traces 22. Flexure / conductor structure 10 may be conventionally spot welded to load beam 34. The load beam 34 typically includes a protrusion or load button (not shown) near the point connection between the load beam 34 and the read / write head 36 so that the head 36 is Therefore, relative pitching and rolling can be relatively performed within a limited range. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, the load beam 34 is of a conductive stainless steel structure (similar to flexure member 12), but the conductive traces 22 are positioned sufficiently far from the load beam structure to allow for Note that there is no significant capacitance to ground. However, in accordance with the principles of the present invention, if a load beam structure having an integrated gimbal is used and the intermediate flexure body member described in connection with FIG. 2 is not required, the load beam itself will be in the signal path. It can also be etched to include cavities along it to reduce capacitance to ground. FIG. 4 shows a graph 40 plotting the capacitance to ground as a function of the width of the cavity 22 when the flexure is mounted on a grounded load beam. Graph 42 shows only a slight capacitance reduction in the absence of a grounded load beam. In this way, there is no need to fabricate or etch cavities within the load beam itself unless, for example, the conductor is integrated with a load beam having an integrated gimbal rather than being realized with a separate flexure member. Returning to graph 40, if the width of the cavity is made too small, the capacitance remains relatively high, but if the width of the cavity is made too large, the diminishing returns point is reached and the stiffness of the structure is reached. May be unnecessarily reduced. The appropriate cavity width ultimately depends on the particular conductor configuration under inspection, but this can easily be determined via modeling or a priori. Although the capacitance to ground can also be reduced by increasing the thickness of the insulating layer, this solution increases the thickness of the resulting suspension and also increases the loaded material and its associated It should be understood that mass is not preferred as it can adversely affect the mechanical effect. Also, although it is possible to use narrower conductive traces to reduce capacitance to ground, this narrower conductive trace results in an undesirable increase in conductor resistance. Thus, the use of precisely shaped cavities facilitates the production of potentially thinner suspension structures with integrated conductors that provide improved electrical performance. 5A-5D show examples of some cavity shapes that can be used adjacent to either the read or write signal path to control the capacitance of that signal path. FIG. 5A shows a substantially rectangular interior boundary that defines a cavity in the flexure member. Although the illustrated cavity helps reduce the magnitude of the capacitance to ground, the vertical intersection of the conductor with the cavity boundary can create a sharp or step function transition in impedance along the conductor path. For a single conductor, the capacitance per unit length approximates: Where: C g = capacitance to ground l = conductor length ε r = permittivity K C = capacitive edge coefficient b = conductor width t = near the insulator thickness boundary and adjacent to the conductive flexure member The capacitance of the conductor region to ground is thus substantially different from the capacitance of the conductor region near the boundary and adjacent to the cavity to ground. This sudden change in capacitance causes a nearly step-wise impedance change in the conductor as it crosses the boundary. In high frequency applications, stepwise changes in impedance along a conductor path cause traveling wave reflections that distort the transmitted waveform. Thus, a cavity boundary that is curved or bent at an angle as shown in FIGS. 5B-5D is likely to provide higher frequency performance than the cavity boundary shown in FIG. 5A. Of course, the thickness of the flexure member serving as the ground plane may also be varied to provide a more gradual impedance change for any of the cavity geometries shown in FIGS. 5A-5D (FIG. 2A). ). It should be understood that the cavity may be formed along a lateral edge of the flexure member, so that the boundary of the cavity may be either the internal boundary or the external boundary of the flexure member. FIG. 6 shows an equivalent circuit diagram representing a characteristic transmission line model 49 of a typical readout circuit, conductor, and magnetoresistive (MR) readhead system using a stainless steel flexure of the integrated conductor type. . The MR head equivalent circuit 50 is a conventional model of a 150-kfci (kilo flux change per inch) read element. Conductive trace equivalent circuit 52 represents a conductive trace adjacent to a grounded conductive flexure structure. The capacitance to ground forward and backward resulting from the conductor traces is represented by capacitors 53 and 54. The drive source 56 is swept from about 10 mhz to 5 Ghz to analyze the frequency drive transfer function of the entire circuit. FIGS. 7 and 8 show the results of modeling the transfer function of the circuit for the case where there is no cavity adjacent to the trace in the flexure and for the case where there is a cavity in the flexure. In the former case, the capacitance to forward and backward facing ground is assumed to be on the order of about 14 picofarads, whereas, if there are cavities, the forward and backward facing conductor grounds Can easily be reduced to about 4 picofarads. Without cavities, the modeled circuit has reduced bandwidth and faster roll-off than a similar structure using cavities in accordance with the present invention. Thus, a flexure with integrated conductors according to the present invention provides better bandwidth and higher cut-off frequency in the head circuit. In addition, the entire circuit with the cavity acts as a bandpass filter and exhibits a higher Q. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that, in accordance with the principles of the present invention, advanced two-element transducer designs (such as MR head designs) may employ various conductor geometries and / or cavity configurations for each of the read and write conductive traces. It will be appreciated that the capacitance and / or impedance of the read element and write element signal paths may be separately optimized. FIG. 9 shows a flexure with integrated conductors used in the context of a disk drive. Disk drive 70 includes a rigid base 75 and a rotary storage disk 80 rotatably mounted to base 75 by conventional spindle motor means (not shown). Drive 70 also includes a rotary actuator assembly 82 that, when selectively energized, disposes HGA 30 (described in more detail with respect to FIG. 3), and head 36 therethrough. It includes a voice coil 84 used to move and position relative to a radius of 80. Flex circuit 82 is electrically connected to the conductors on flexure 10 to facilitate communication between head 36 and a remotely located signal processing circuit (not shown). Although the present invention has been described in terms of the presently preferred embodiment, i.e., a flexure structure with conductors, comprising a gimbal, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the present invention may be applied to, for example, a load beam structure with an integrated gimbal, or an insulator It will be apparent that it may be utilized in conjunction with other conductive suspension members having or without conductors mounted, positioned, or embedded at the proximal end. Therefore, the present disclosure should not be construed as limiting. From reading the above disclosure, various alternatives and modifications will always be apparent to those skilled in the art. It is therefore intended that the following appended claims be interpreted as covering all alterations and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of the invention.
