Particularly useful for Although heat-shrinkable tubing made of plastic material has been used for such purposes for many years, the tubing must be slid from the free end of the wire, which in practice is not always convenient. There is a disadvantage that there is no. Attempts to wrap a heat shrinkable plastic sheet around a small diameter object such as a wire splice have not been industrially acceptable in the past due to the difficulty of securing the end of the sheet around the object to be enclosed Was. Clamping devices of the type well known for large cable wrap-around enclosures cannot be used for small wire splices, and attempts to secure the sheet with an adhesive will cause the sheet to become unwrapped around the object during heat shrinkage. They tend to fail because of their tendency to be. The present invention seeks to provide a clever and fairly inexpensive means to mitigate these problems. The present invention is a heat-shrinkable article for winding around an object up to 25 mm in diameter, wherein the heat-shrinkable article comprises: (i) a cloth having heat-shrinkable fibers extending in a winding direction; A flexible layer of crosslinked plastic material laminated to one major surface of the fabric so as to face outwardly from the object during use; and (iii) other layers of the fabric facing inwardly toward the object during use. The article comprises a heat-activated adhesive carried on a major surface of the article, wherein in use the heat recovery of the fabric causes the article to curl around the object and toward the surface carrying the adhesive; And a heat-shrinkable article adapted to activate the adhesive. The flexible layer (ii) and the adhesive (iii) may be carried (preferably deposited) directly on the fabric or on other intervening layers that are in direct contact with the fabric. By arranging the heat-shrinkable fabric as the inner layer (when in use) of the two-component laminate with the cross-linked plastic material, the present invention enhances the wrapping action and counteracts the tendency to unwrap during heat-shrinking, The shrinkage of the heat-shrinkable fibers in the winding direction to curl the article upon shrinkage has the advantage of having an asymmetric shrinkage force that occurs during lamination. Surprisingly, even when the overlap slips up to 50% of the initial overlap width upon shrinkage, without unacceptable opening, the article of the present invention allows the initial joint around the object by the overlap joint using a pressure sensitive adhesive. It has been found that recovery remains after fixation. Preferably, the fabric has heat-shrinkable fibers extending substantially only in the winding direction. The article has a heat shrinkage ratio (i.e., a ratio of the length in the winding direction before the heat shrinkage to the length in the winding direction after the completion of the heat shrinkage) of 1.10: 1 to 5: 1, more preferably 1.10: 1. The ratio is preferably from 3: 1 to 3: 1, particularly preferably from 1.5: 1 to 2: 1. Articles may be supplied in the form of strips or rolls and may be 1 to 1000 m long in the winding direction. Such rolls or strips are conveniently supplied to a relatively small article on the production line, such as an automatic loading device or other suitable device for surrounding a wiring splice. Alternatively, the article of the present invention is in the form of a precut strip or sheet carrying a pressure sensitive adhesive on at least one of the distal regions that can secure the article wrapped around the object during use prior to heat shrinking of the article. May be supplied. Various forms of the fabric with the heat-shrinkable fibers can be selected to meet the end use conditions, and one preferred form of the heat-shrinkable fibers of the present invention is high density polyethylene, preferably by irradiation (particularly radiation). It may be formed from crosslinked high density polyethylene. Suitable materials for the layer of plastic material (thermoplastic material) to be laminated to the fabric can be selected by trial and error, the preferred material being low density polyethylene, preferably low density polyethylene which has been laminated to the fabric and then crosslinked by irradiation. . The fabric may be irradiated before lamination to the plastic layer, and is preferably irradiated with the plastic laminate after lamination and before coating with an adhesive. Any heat activated adhesive may be carried on the surface of the fabric facing away from the laminated plastic material. Preferred adhesives are hot melt adhesives or thermoset adhesives, the adhesive being selected to match the end use of the article. The material, dimensions and structure of the article are selected to match the end use. For example, for automotive wiring splices, by the application of hot air or infrared heating, at the outer surface of the article, preferably at a temperature of 250-270 ° C, for less than 30 seconds, preferably for less than 20 seconds, more preferably for 10 to 10 seconds. It may be selected to make the article shrinkable in 15 seconds. Examples of adhesives suitable for the present invention are described in WO-A-8707755, GB-A-2104800, EP-A-0157478 and international application PCT / GB95 / 00731. Preferably, methods of forming a fabric by weaving, applying a plastics material laminate and applying an adhesive are well known to those skilled in the art. Although the fabric article is generally described in GB-A-2134334, it is preferred to omit the second plastic laminate and metallized Mylar laminate described therein, including heat-shrinkable fibers and other Fiber. For example, the cloth may comprise 0.2-0.3 mm diameter crosslinked high density polyethylene shrinkable warp fibers at 35.4 ends per centimeter (90 ends / inch) and glass 3 × 68 g / km or 0.1 mm. Plain fabrics (1 over and 1 under) with PET monofilament (2 / pic) weft fibers at 3.9 picks per centimeter (10 picks / inch) can be used. The weft fibers are separated so that they do not unacceptably interfere with the shrinkage of the warp fibers. Alternative fabric designs are shown in the table below. Preferably, the fabric article may have an adhesive polymer material, preferably an adhesive polymer film laminate (preferably polyethylene film), which renders the fabric article substantially non-porous. For example, a low density polyethylene film having a thickness of about 0.2 mm may be laminated to one side of the woven fabric by a known lamination method. After lamination, the film and fabric are irradiated with conventional (known) means at a dose of at least 10 Mrad, preferably at least 12 Mrad, especially at least 14 Mrad, in order to improve the thermal performance and the integral bonding of the laminated article. (Particularly radiation irradiation). Suitable irradiation methods and devices, such as electron beams, are well known. It is undesirable to use doses above 20 megarads, and doses above 15 megarads provide little additional benefit. Cloth articles are prepared by a method which includes the method described in EP-A-032 4630, which is generally known for making articles "planar tight" against the permeation of liquid in the plane of a cloth sheet. And may be made resistant. The present invention also provides a component kit comprising an article as described above, and a pressure sensitive adhesive for securing the article to be wrapped around the object in use prior to heat shrinkage of the article. The present invention also provides a method of surrounding an object, comprising wrapping the article of the present invention around the object and heat shrinking the article. Such a method preferably comprises the step of fixing the article wrapped around the object, preferably by means of a pressure-sensitive adhesive, before heat shrinking the article. As mentioned above, the present invention is particularly applicable where the surrounding object is an electrical wire splice, especially an automotive wiring splice. Preferably, the average diameter of the enclosed object is less than 20 mm, more preferably 5 to 15 mm. Articles having a low application temperature range may be manufactured by using linear low density polyethylene fibers instead of the currently preferred high density polyethylene heat shrinkable fibers. High temperature specifications include high temperature adhesives and laminating materials that can be readily selected by those skilled in the art, for example, as described in GB-A-2133740, as well as glass fibers, such as PVDF as a recoverable fiber. This can be achieved by using a fluoropolymer. Embodiments of the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings. FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of the structure of the article of the present invention. FIG. 2 is a diagram showing the article of the present invention wound around a wiring splice with the heat-shrinkable fibers of the article in the winding direction. 3A to 3D show the formation of a fabric (i) with a flexible laminate (ii). 4A and 4B are schematic diagrams of applying a hot melt and a pressure-sensitive adhesive to a laminated fabric. 5A-5E show details of the adhesive application and the winding of the adhesive-carrying heat-shrinkable article around the wire joint. FIG. 6 is a schematic diagram of heat shrinkage of an article around a wire joint. As shown in exploded form in FIG. 1, the article of the present invention comprises a fabric 10 having heat-shrinkable fibers 12 located in the winding direction, a low-density polyethylene film layer 14 laminated on one main surface of the fabric, It consists of a polyamide hot melt adhesive coating 16 on the other major surface. In FIG. 2, article 20 is secured in a wrapped configuration around a splice (not visible) of wire 25 by pressure sensitive adhesive 20 in an overlap joint. Upon heat shrinkage of the article, the hot melt adhesive 40 flows and upon cooling, solidifies to seal the enclosed wire splice against contamination and / or short circuits. FIG. 3A shows a plain woven fabric made of heat-shrinkable 0.25 mm diameter high density polyethylene warp monofilament 30 and 0.1 mm diameter polyethylene terephthalate weft monofilament 32. This fabric 34 is coated on one side with a 0.25 mm thick low density polyethylene extruded layer, as shown schematically in FIG. 3B, and as shown schematically in FIG. Laminate article 35 has been exposed to 14 megarads of ionizing radiation from electron beam 36 in a known manner. Then, as shown in FIG. 3D, the irradiated fabric laminate 38 is longitudinally cut into rolls 39 that are 50 mm wide and 100 m long or other dimensions that meet end use conditions. FIG. 4A shows a known polyamide hot melt adhesive strip 40 and a known double sided pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape strip 41 applied to a fabric laminate supplied from a roll 42 similar to that produced in FIG. 3D. It indicates that you want to. An application device of any convenient design applies sufficient heat and pressure to deposit the hot melt adhesive and PSA on the side of the fabric away from the LDPE laminate. The resulting structure is shown in more detail in FIG. 4B, where the cloth 45 has an LDPE laminate 46 on one major surface and a hot melt adhesive 47 on most of the other major surfaces. The edge strip carries the PSA 48 and has no hot melt. The overall thickness of the heat-recoverable adhesive-coated article is about 0.7 mm. FIG. 5A shows a hot melt adhesive 50 and a pressure sensitive adhesive 51 applied to the fabric surface of a fabric / LDPE laminate 52, wherein the hot melt adhesive 50 is an end strip of fabric to which PS A51 is applied. Is terminated adjacent to. FIG. 5B shows the adhesive-carrying laminate 53 with the wiring splices placed thereon, after which the laminate 53 is cut to a suitable length as shown in FIG. Supplied with the splice to the wrapping means, the guide 55 secures the laminate around the splice 54 by an overlapping connection with the PSA 51, as shown in FIG. 5E. These procedures can be easily automated by technicians for efficient use in automotive wiring manufacturing. FIG. 6 schematically illustrates a wiring splice 60 in which a heat-shrinkable adhesive-carrying fabric laminate 61 is wrapped around and secured to the wiring splice, and the laminate 61 wraps the wrapped article 61 around the wiring splice 60. The wiring assembly 63 is supplied to a known belt heater to be contracted, and the finished wiring assembly 63 is protected.
